Summary of Major MMORPGs and RPGs in Gamescom 2015: A Progressive Report

And once again, the game industry’s other big trade fair has descended down on us. Starting today, those who are in Cologne, Germany will experience this annual event organized by the Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware (BIU).  While for us on the other side of the world and everywhere else in this planet, we will get to experience it a day after, on the 6th of August, and ending on the 9th of August.

So what do we currently know about the trade fair? We know there are a lot of them games to be covered this year – 24, if we aren’t wrong. And we sure do know that you will be overwhelmed over the days with a lot of news and coverage coming from the conference. That’s why we have made this progressive article for you that will be updated on a daily basis.

Starting up, the list of games that will be covered in Gamescom 2015:

Dark Souls III

A trailer for Bandai Namco and From Software’s upcoming third installment for the beloved Dark Souls franchise was shown at Gamescom 2015. The trailer shows an incredulous amount of gameplay and in-game footage. If you missed the closed doors presentation at E3 2015, then weep no more, as some of those footages was shown here.

Dark Souls III will be available for PS4, Xbox One and PC early 2016.

What We Know

  • Compared to its predecessors, Dark Souls 3 is much more smoother and quicker. It’s still the same twitch-based, reactions-heavy brawler. But the difference is, the entire thing runs without any obvious chugging or slowg indown as you make your way through the vast, gothic landscape.

  • The Gamescom demo has limited the choosing of character to only 2. But of course, at release, more will be made available together with customization. The whole process is a familiar rite of passage where the character steps out into a harsh world, lights a bonfire, makes its way down an ancient stone staircase, with reanimated corpse sneaking up behind him, and of course, die.

  • Arts is a big new addition to Dark SOuls 3. Without having to change your weapons, this triggered ability that allows you to carry out different attacks with them. A clear inspiration are the “trick” weapons from Bloodborne, however, the Arts are in a way more suitable to the Dark Souls setting. Arts can only be recharged at bonfires and is limited to 20 users only. It is just similar to the life-restoring Estus Flasks. It brings a balance to the straightforward element of the game by adding an element of strategy and conservation. The gap between feeling both new and familiar at the same time, is also being bridged by such elements.

  • Making a return are familiar systems such as life-saving dodge-rolls and parry/riposte. You need to be ready and able to use these skills at the drop of a hat – that’s the impact that the improved speed of Dark Souls 3 brings. A knife-wielding beast will have chased you down and attacked, before you can even turn around say “Boom!” In this game, you’re going to die without lightning-speed, decisive reactions.

Here’s a new batch of screenshots to make you die and be born again:

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Not all game will require a brand new trailer to show for Gamescom 2015. One such title is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Instead of a spiffy new video, they opted for a fresh set of screenshots, so far. We see the rugged gentleman protagonist Adam Jensen in the video sporting a new pair of sunglasses and handsome goatee. A new character, Jim Miller, also has a new render.

Miller is the branch director of a newly-created division of Interpol that fights organized crime and terrorism – Task Force 29. He is passionate about protecting civilians, committed to his job, and a direct and decisive leader. His entire career he has gone through with unwavering respect for the chain of command. However, lately, he is starting to balk and reconsider his stance due to questionable orders passed down by his boss.

Thit title is planned by Eidos Montreal to be put out in early 2016 for the Playstation 4. That means a pretty hectic schedule for Square Enix, the game’s publisher.

Fallout 4

What a bummer.
@Evoker17 there is no conference. It’s a presentation in our booth that will be given over and over. It will not be streamed.

What We Know

  • Fallout 4 doesn’t end after the main story has been completed, and there will be no level cap either. Meaning, while you are exploring the fantasticaly rendered Boston wasteland, you can still play and modify your survivor however you see fit. What’s even better is, after completing the main story, you can still continue to play and level up.

  • With responsive weapons that are fun to shoot, players can experience a much more fluid shooting. Adding a more realistic touch to encounters are enemies that respond much more naturally to you and your attacks. VATS works even better than before, with a smooth transition between slow-down VATS and standard combat systems.

  • Traditionalist fans of the series don’t need to worry of big, impactful changes. Case in point, Vault Boy illustrated perk system is still there. But to put much more flexibility and meaning in general, the system has been revamped. A skill or perk wil be gained for each point put into either of the stats on the SPECIAL tree. Thus, 200 different possible perks and skills are provided as each of these can later on be upgraded.

Final Fantasy 15

Enix Square has released Dawn, a new trailer for Final Fantasy XV, during Gamescom 2015. According to the trailer’s official description, “The destiny of the stars is set in motion 15 years before the events of FINAL FANTASY XV. As the shadow of turmoil is cast over the land, there is hope on the horizon as an unbreakable bond is forged between a father and son, and the light of a new dawn rises on a hero.”   Get your ‘kerchiefs ready as the trailer can be too emotional for some. It opens up with “Fifteen years ago…Fate would fall to the father and son of Lucis”, and goes on to show several events that resulted to the what is now the world of FFXV.   In the trailer, a terrified young Luna is shown trying to escape a soldier who is trying to sieze her. The scene then cuts to armed guards doing security checkpoint. But it was the dog that got most of the viewers’ attention. A large part of the trailer shows a young Noctis and his grandfather King Regis. In the middle of the rainstorm, right next to his car, he holds Noctis sleeping, though restless, in his arms. The king looks at his grandson with great love and even greater sadness, and whispers a promise. The camera pans to larger angle that will show the silhouettes of three giant figures – resembling summons, some of which seems to be Odin, Bahamut, and Alexander.   The title card and the sound of a cell phone buzzing concludes the trailer. If you’ve seen Final Fantasy XV: Episode Duscae, you’ll be reminded of how it began.

What We Know
More information about FFXV was revealed by Square Enix director Hajime Tabata during a special presentation broadcast from Gamescom 2015. In response to questions from fans, some information on gameplay and other elements were revealed by Tabata, although the game’s story was mostly the focus for the presentation.

  • 15 years after the events portrayed in the Dawn trailer, the events of FFXV began. Most of what has been shown in the trailer was mostly from in-game footage.

  • A political conflict marks the beginning of FFXV’s story. The kingdom of Noctis, known as Lucis, is on the verge of reconciliation with the kingdom of Nifelheim. Before the signing of armistice, Noctis leaves for the imperial province of Tenebrae to marry the Lady Lunafreya therefore formalizing Lucis’ union with the state. This arrangement turned out to be tricky maneuver resulting to Lucis’ throne and sacred crystals being seized by the imperial city’s army. Noctis learns that he, his father, and Lunafreya are all believed to be dead while he was on his way to Tenebrae. Vowing to set things right and fulfill his destiny, Noctis sets out with his three companions–Ignis, Gladiolus, and Prompto.

  • Near the end of the Dawn trailer, hidden by the clouds are the shadows of three huge figure floating in the mist behind a building. According to Tabata, these are not Eidolons – giant monsters that Noctis will be able to summon to his aid. At the moment, there are no further information on what they actually are.

  • According to Tabata, Lunafreya, or Luna, will be a strong character.”She’s not one of those weak, vulnerable heroines that need protecting. She has her own will and determination, and she has very strong inner strength. She really acts of her own initiative to achieve her goals,” Tabata said.

  • Whether or not airships will be included in the game, there’s still some debate into it. According to Tabata, the dev team has found a way to make the airships fly up to the height of the Eidolon Ramuh’s eyes, about as high as a bird in real life would fly. But what’s possible with the current console technology is still debatable, “We’re still looking into it. Where we are right now, I think that height would be technically possible, but we’re currently looking into making them fly properly at a greater height.” If it’s all up to Tabata, he wants to add fully functional airships although right now it depends on the game’s development cycle.

  • The system where Noctis can team up with another party member for joint attacks, The Cross Chain, will be modfied somewhere between the Episode Duscae demo and the final release. In the final game, there will be more options for attacks. Together with a non-manual triggering type of Cross Chain attack that in certain conditions, will execute automatically.

  • The concept of having a deep, emotional story remains the same, although FFXV’s story and look are very different now from their original commencement in Final Fantasy Versus XIII. One visitor asked about FFXV adapting FF Versus XIII’s “saddest, most dramatic storyline in the Final Fantasy series.” To this, Tabata replied that players can still look forward to tragedy and calamity on an epic scale. This story will focus on father-son bonds and camaraderie among friends.

  • Tabata revealed the main villain of FFXV to be male, althougn he could’t say much about it. Tabata compared him to other villains in previous FF games, saying that he could be the biggest, baddest villain yet, “He won’t be beaten by any of the previous villains. He’s going to top all of them.”

  • Some of the most iconic Final Fantasy creatures, such as the Marlboros, will be in FFXV. A gameplay clip was shown by Tabata where Noctis and friends walked down a rocky slope into a swamp beneath a tree. Noctis came upon a small flower while wading through the still water. As soon as Noctis came close to the flower, a Marlboro sprang out of the ground and began attacking with its tentacles. According to Tabata, Marlboros will hide in swamps as part of the flora. It will ambush the party and use its famous “Bad Breath” attack if Noctis gets too close. The swampy area shown with the Marlboros will be encountered over a halfway through the game, says Tabata.

  • Reconstructed face of FFXV Black Haired Woman in Gamescom 2015According to Tabataa, the dev team has already finalized the content for a playable tech demo, although we don’t have a release window for it yet.

  • An unnamed woman with straight black hair and bangs is one of the most popular characters among fans. We don’t have a name for her as Tabata could’t reveal her name, but informs us that she will still be present in the game playing a major part in the story.

Heroes of the Storm

During Gamescom, Blizzard revealed 2 new trailers for Heroes of the Storm.

Known as the monk from Diablo 3, Kharazim, will be the first melee support character to join the game.

Blizzard also announced Infernal Shrines, a new Diablo-themed battleground.

What We Know
Just when you thought Blizzard will leave its heavy-hitting MOBA-ish Heroes of the Storm in American soil, think again. Content for the MOBA’s Heroes of the Storm is being stepped up with three new heroes, a new map and a bunch of news skins for existing heroes.

  • Originally announced during E3 2015, the first character is Kharazim from Diablo 3 – a support melee monk. ALthough it seems that he will be joining the Nexus soon with the trailer already being released. According to Blizzard, “He’s a mobile melee Hero who can specialize in different paths by choosing one of three traits via his talents. Kharazim can select Iron Fists to gain bonus attack damage, Transcendence to heal himself through melee combat, or Insight to restore mana and find a balance between both offensive and defensive roles.”

  • Along with Kharazim, Rexxar was also announced by Blizzard to join the fight. The “Warcraft” character is a ranged warrior who will be joined by his bear Misha. “He’s a unique ranged warrior, who calls on his ferocious companion to follow him around the battlefield and attack his foes. Misha is integral to Rexxar’s gameplay, harassing enemies, absorbing damage, and stunning enemy characters with a targeted charge ability,” the Blizzard announcement says.

  • Artanis from “StarCraft” round up the new batch of heroes. He is a warrior and the leader of the Protoss. According to Blizzard, he is the character perfect for players who like to get up close and personal with enemies, “The leader of the Protoss will soon join the fight as the first StarCraft warrior, and he’ll be bringing some heavy hitting abilities with him.”

  • Sticking with the “Eternal Conflict” them that Blizzard has got going on currently, a new map named Infernal Shrines was announced. This Diablo-themed Battleground features three lanes and “three shrines that will periodically gather power. Teams can unleash this power by activating a shrine, defeating its guardians, and summoning a devastating Punisher to fight for them. These powerful bosses will spawn with one of three deadly affixes—Arcane, Frozen, or Mortar— and will hunt down nearby enemy Heroes as well as pushing the lane closest to their shrine.” Does that make you conjure images of Sky Temple and Tomb of the Spider Queen in one?

  • New skins for the existing characters were also announced, in addition to the new characters and map. This includes “Earthbreaker Thrall,” “Sgt. Doomhammer,” “Judgement Uther,” and “Prisoner Tychus.” New mounts will also be made available such as “Malthael’s Phantom,” “Treasure Goblin,” and “Judgement Charger.” The hype has already started although Blizzard is yet to announce when the new content is expected to drop.

Star Citizen

A new multi-crew feature has been unveiled by Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium. In this feature, multiple players are able to join each other in a spaceship and pilot it together.

If you want to see the live presentation, click below:

Along with the multi-crew system, the social system was also initially shown to the press in attendance at Gamescom 2015. The social module was revealed by Chris Roberts as being in preparation to be launched sometime during Aug 2015.

Also shown by Chris Roberts and the rest of Cloud Imperium Games is the new FPS module. They showed what they’ve been working on with Star Marine, how far they’ve already come, and shown a little footage of its gameplay.

What We Know

  • Social module will give players their first taste of what it’s like to be beyond their hangars. This will also lay the foundation for expanded planet-side module that will be released in the future. As soon as the first social environment has been confirmed, there will be plans for support for up to 20 players. A weapons store and a medical unit were just two of the various buildings included in it. Hub buildinngs such as Jobwells and bars is where you can acquire missions, while disreputable jobs can be found somewhere else. There will also be PvE interactions including mugging and back alley deals, while NPCs will still to be added.

  • Star Marine will have third person animations and inertia mechanics. Tied to classes are gadgets, for example, a hologram will be given by a heavy marine. There will also be small placed holo-shield.

  • Large worlds in Arena Commander 2.0 will have humongous maps, extending up to hundreds of millions of kilometers, that allows for a consistent universe minus the need for area transitions. These new, large maps will be handled perfectly by the newly designed zone system, which depending on your position in the game universe, the game will render and stream items. Although some areas are hugely empty, others will be extremely dense, and the zone system is designed to handle that minus loading screens. Thanks to physics grid system, different zones can co-exist with varying physics. Flying together in these zones are single-seat and multi-crew ships.

  • Multi-crew in Arena Commander 2.0 involves 10 people in-game in a large world. Players can launch several ships together such as a Super Hornet, a Gladius, and a Cutlass. Even with jumping three thousand kilometers, there will be no loading screens. Derelicts and all systems including weapons can have restored power.

  • Unveiled were new SC peripherals made by Saitek, that will come in different colors and designs to fit the different ship brands. To allow people to aim more easily, joysticks and throttles will have trackballs on them. Beginner joystick and throttle will cost $149. Players will be able to design a station with your keyboard and one peripheral on each side, as the stick and throttle are detachable from each other. Based off of the Saitek X-65, the high-end HOTAS setup will come with an OLED screen display. Also part of the SC product line are headsets and mics.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

A playable hands-on demo was provided for Ubisoft’s open-world survival shooter game – and it’s up to 1,800 hours of gameplay.

It shares the designated booth with some of the titles under Ubisoft’s wing such as Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, For Honor, Just Dance 2016, Trackmania Turbo, and Rainbow Six Siege, which is also from the Clancy franchise.

The premise for The Division is during the Black Friday rush, a pandemic suddenly spread around the city, to which the task of restoring the peace and order in New York is placed on the players. They are also given weapons and accessories that, in order to be used to their own advantage, are fully customizable, just like their very own characters.

Some impressions of the gameplay has reported removal of the melee and stealth from the game. However, we can also assume that maybe Ubisoft made the decision to remove them so as to also discourage abusing them when playing multiplayer games. Nevertheless, some are saying that ambushes are still viable, which, for those who are more adept in using stealth in this type of game, could be a disadvantage.

Whether Ubisoft has indeed removed the mentioned modes are still to be confirmed.

World of Warcraft

The sixth expansion for Blizzard’s long-running MMO was announced – World of Warcraft: Legion.

Gul’dan was featured in the shown cinematic trailer, where he was shown setting up the events for the next expansion. Also, Illidan, the Betrayer, seems to be back.

Bad news has hit Azeroth with the Burning Legion making a return. The next World of Warcraft expansion is called Legion. It includes a new continent called The Broken Isles, a level cap hike to 110, new dungeons and raids, a new honor system, artifact weapons, class order halls and a new demon hunter class.

Also, take a look back at WoW’s 5th expansion, the Warlords of Draenor, with a new trailer, The Story So Far…

What We Know
At the heart of Azeroth is a forgotten land called The Broken Isles. Previously a Night Elf civilisation, this continent was destroyed and turned into a graveyard. At the Tomb of Sargeras is where you will be facing the Legion. Thanks to Gul’dan, it has become an active gateway to endless Legion worlds. The demonic invasion exerienced during the War of the Ancients is nothing compared to the invasion underway.

  • An event called The Broken Shores marks the beginning of the experience of The Broken Isles – as with Warlords of Draenor, before the expansion launches. Players will be able to wieled Ashbringer, Doomhammer, and other fabled artifacts. Class Orders, like The Silver Hand, will be available. Titan tools called the Pillars of Creation will be searched in The Broken Isles.

  • The story behind the Demon Hunter Hero Class revolves around Illidan. During The Burning Crusade, he sent his elite agents back on a suicide mission. Teaching the true meaning of sacrifice will be the theme around one’s introduction to the class. With only two specs available – Havoc for DPS and Vengeance for tanking, players will also be able to double jump.

  • With one artifact available for each specialization, there will be 36 artifacts in total. A lengthy quest chain also changes based on what you’re playing as. Some of the examples are below:

    • Frost Death Knights has the dual rune blades forged from the shards of Frostmourne: Icebringer and Soulreaper

    • Felo’melorn goes to Fire Mages
    • The Eagle Spear goes to Survival Hunters
    • Doomhammer goes to Enhancement Shamen
    • Customizing their forms, Fangs of the First Nightsaber goes to Feral Druids and
    • Unlock traits, and customise your weapons visually and gameplay-wise with the use of Artifact Power which is earned by Adventuring.

  • While the Horde and Alliance are at war, Class Orders will unite together. You will become their leader, and shared spaces will be made available for your entire class, called Order Halls. Warlocks will take dominion on the Legion homeworld; Paladins have a holy place under Light’s Hope Chapel; Shamen have a conclave overlooking the Maelstrom. You will customize and upgrade your Artifacts at the halls. An evolution of the WoD follower system, Champions, can also be found here. Although the Champion System has fewer followers, it will nonetheless have a more important role with customisation and is able to interact with the world.

  • 5 new zones were mentioned. Val’Sharah, where you stop the Emerald Nightmare from invading your world by having to enter it; Stormheim, where the fate of Vykrul, who left Northrend, you will need to uncover; Azsuna, where to get control of a Pillar of Creation, you will need to race Queen Azshara; Highmountain, where the lair of Neltharion you will visit; and Suramar, where living undisturbed for 10,000 years are a new race of Elves.

  • Under the leadership of Khadgar, the mages of the Kirin Torcome to the Burning Isles to try and stop the Legion, and Dalaran will return as a main hub.

  • Finally, Beta was announced to kick off later this year.

Do keep coming back to this page for more updates – which will come to you on a daily basis.
