Multiverse Ceases Operations, Buffy Dead, Firefly Maybe Not

Multiverse, the game developer working on MMOs based on the popular TV series Firefly and the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has closed its doors.  The Firefly MMO was announced in 2008, but then halted in favor of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Another developer, DarkCryo Entertainment, is working on Firefly Universe Online.

Multiverse was founded in 2004 and pushed its proprietary game platform, the Multiverse Platform, as a foundational system to get MMO games up and running faster by providing the basics needed to get started, lowering development costs for MMO developers.  The platform never really caught on as Multiverse failed to produce any notable games using it.  The marketing-based games produced, including some based on the Avatar movie in 2009, were a flop.

The Firefly and Buffy MMOs were meant to do that, but lack of funding caused delays and now the company’s closing.  The company officially closed its doors at the end of December, 2011.
